Southern Italy is the area south of Rome that runs all the way through the heel and toe of the Italian “boot”, together with the island of Sicily.
Here is the land of sun soaked oranges, outlandish citrons, “green gold” bergamots, and lemons bathed in the warm Mediterranean sea breeze.
THE IDEAL CLIMATE AND MORE
Southern Italy enjoys a balmy Mediterranean climate ideal for citrus crops to thrive. The summers here are hot and the winters are warm: in Sicily for example, the average winter temperatures are barely below 12 degrees Celsius.
But it is not just the temperatures that make Southern Italy so unique, other wonders of mother nature are also in play.
Fertile land between sea and mountain, rich soil surrounding the citrus fields, the salty and warm sea breeze of the coastal towns all make for some very unique conditions in these areas of Southern Italy.
Take the southernmost tip of the Italian peninsula, Calabria, for instance, where bergamot has found its fertile ground, among other citrus.

From local food festivals and old sayings, to marvellous regional dishes; ever since their introduction in the 11th century by the Arabs, citrus fruit has held a special space in the culture of Southern Italy.
